As a fairly new dad it's interesting how the difference between Leadership ("Let's do this") and command-and-control ("Do this or else") really does apply to both the business world and raising kids.
Take brushing teeth, for example. My kid doesn't want to do it, but if I make it playful and turn it into a game, he'll mostly cooperate. We both stay calm and it actually becomes fun.
But when you try the command-and-control approach ("Brush your teeth NOW!"), sure, it works in the moment. However, we're both would be stressed out, and the second I'm not watching like a hawk, he'll skip it entirely.
The exact same pattern plays out in business. We all know that intimidating boss who rules through fear. People comply when they're being watched, but the moment that boss steps away, everyone does whatever they want.
Much better approach? Create a shared vision and common goals. When your team genuinely understands the "why" behind what they're doing, they'll move toward those goals on their own. No constant pressure needed.
Whether it's a toddler or a talented professional, people respond better to "Let's figure this out together" than "Do this or else."
PS: No kids were harmed for this photo - that's my AI-generated kid, not my real one :)
I'm curious - have you noticed any situations where the command-and-control approach actually works better long-term, or does the collaboration approach win every time?
